Prague: A fill of European culture, March 11-14

Prague is located only a 3 hour trains ride from Leipzig, so we frequently visited the city when I lived in Germany. But after the German reunification I had been back only once and was disappointed about the huge tourist crowds and Disney World looks. This time I visited out of season. Crowds amassed only in front of the town hall astronomical clock to watch the dance of the apostles and at the old Jewish cemetery. The narrow streets away from main attractions were almost empty. And best of all was a late evening trip to the Hradschin, the old Prague castle. I could hardly believe that I had the gothic cathedral, the court yards and narrow alleyways all to myself and circled St. Vitus cathedral (construction commenced in the 14th century) a couple of times, gazing in awe at the tall gothic towers and flying buttresses. The gargoyles high above grinned just like in olden times.

“Spring” Cat Skiing, March 21/22

Best run of the weekend

Sometimes even catskiers have to hike

This time we picked the wrong weekend! Although the forecast called for highs of -2 to -5oC, it warmed up to plus 9oC. Avalanches came down all around us in a hurry. Two avalanche accidents involving snowmobilers this weekend in BC, but our guide Larry picked safe areas. Unfortunately the snow was far from perfect. Only a couple of runs each day in the powder we had hoped for. Oh well, you get some right, you get some wrong. Other than the bad snow conditions, we had lots of fun skiing with Monashee Mountain Cats, a great outfit with friendly and helpful staff and guides!

Late February Pow, Feb 28

Who would have thought! February ends with a big dump of snow (weekly total at Seymour almost 90 cm). Dawn patrol at Hollyburn to find 40 cm of well-bonded pow. The girl team out for a Thursday night snowshoe hike to Dog Mt through winterwonderland (sorry – battery dead – no pictures) followed by birthday celebration at the Raven. Yeha - girls rock!

And just in time before all the beauty gets washed away we sample the pow on the Coquihalla. After some exploring we head to the Needle Trees. Knee-deep, faceshots, and lots of smiles. Even the snow in the lower tress was quite acceptable. Unfortunately freezing levels are forecast to climb to 1700 m today (Sunday) - why do the fronts never wait till Monday?

Possibly more snow next week - March roars in like a lion!
